Abstract


AN ANALYSIS OF ORNAMENTAL FIGURES IN PLAIN WOVEN RUGS OF THE CENTRAL ANATOLIA REGION
Plain weaving with kirkit one of the weaving techniques, have served the purpose of decorating and various needs of the people throughout their lives. Types of plain weaving with kirkit are rug, cicim, zili and sumak. The different motifs on these weavings express many feelings, thoughts and lifestyle in the geographical region. The aim of this research is to determine the characteristics of the motifs used for decorating and ornamenting plain weaving with kirkit in the Central Anatolia Region. The beautiful forms made painted, unpainted, plain or embossed to decorate any surface are called ornament. Fifteen plain woven rugs with different motifs described in the written sources of the Central Anatolia Region, were taken as a sample for this study. During the research, information forms were formed from the data obtained regarding the plain weaving. Each bezeme on the plain weaving was examined and evaluated. Twelve motifs of figures were found in plain weaving samples examined. It has been determined that the most frequently used motif is ram’s horn followed by the Wolf’s mouth motif. It has also been found that rugs of Central Anatolia Region were mostly produced with kilim technique.
